Gallaudet University 10th Anniversary of DPN: Free Live Gallaudet Via
Satellite Teleconference Series:
Ten years ago the Deaf President Now Movement rocked the campus of
Gallaudet University, and the deaf communities throughout the world. To
commemorate the tenth anniversary of this pivotal movement in deaf
history, Gallaudet University held a special-edition teleconference
series, "Deaf President Now: The Next Millennium." Broadcast
live via satellite from the campus of Gallaudet University and aired on
three different dates throughout the spring of 1998, this educational and
entertaining series was geared toward teenagers and young adults.
REACH FOR THE STARS: You CAN!
Held on Wednesday, February 11, 1998 from 1 - 2:30 p.m. EST
Gallaudet students Ann Lynn Smith and David Kurs, co-hosted this event
with their guests Jamie Clark, the founder and president of Clark Internet
Services, Inc., known as ClarkNet; and Eva Roque, research biologist at
the National Institute of Health Dental Research Laboratory. This
interactive talk show examined the current job market, the keys to a
successful career, and what employers are really looking for in
prospective employees. Pre-taped footage of Deaf and Hard of Hearing
professionals at their job sites gave audience members a chance to see
these "go-getters" in action.

"DEAF PRESIDENT NOW: The Pulse of the People"
Held on Friday, March 13, 1998 from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. EST
During March 1988, a crowd roared "Deaf President Now" on the
campus of Gallaudet Unviersity in Washington, D.C. When there was a
lingering of doubt that a deaf person could lead the school, a campus
revolution erased that doubt and resulted in the appointment of
Gallaudet's first deaf president, Dr. I. King Jordan. This exclusive
teleconference took place on the tenth anniversary of the day Dr. Jordan
was appointed. Moderator Dwight Benedict, dynamic television personality
who hosted Gallaudet's first teleconference celebrating the inauguration
of President Jordan, introduced a diverse panel of guests, featuring
members of Congress, media, private industry and deaf teenagers.
Discussions covered topics including empowerment, advocacy, vocation and
the DPN Movement's continued resonance in our world today.

"ACADEMIC SUPER BOWL"
Held on April 24, 1998 from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. EST
The championship round of the 2nd Annual National Academic Bowl where
regional competitors from the "Final Five" competed for the
coveted national title was broadcast live. Challenging questions were
drawn from categories such as history, geography, deaf studies, language
and literature, mathematics and many more! As an added attraction, judges
drew the name of one registered sites to answer a question in the bonus
round for a chance at winning a prize. This exciting competition in which
Deaf and Hard of Hearing high school students match wits, was hosted by
Dr. Donalda K. Ammons,.
Live, interactive video and audio teleconferencing technology makes it
possible for participants at sites around the country not only to
"attend" these programs, but to participate as well. Questions
and comments submitted via TTY, voice or fax reach the guest experts
during the program, and their answers become part of the show. The
teleconference was be transmitted in both C-and Ku-bands. Complete
information on satellite were included in the guide provide to each site
coordinator. This series was be brought to the public free of charge.
