GALLAUDET UNIVERSITY   DEAF PRESIDENT NOW ANNIVERSARY

Teaching empowerment through the study of DPN
The Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center recently launched an interactive educational website, focusing on empowerment and deaf people through the "lens" of Deaf President Now. The site is called "DPN for teachers & students," and it takes you step by step through DPN with photographs, a teacher's guide, interactive activities, and additional resources about DPN and deaf empowerment. It also features site "hosts," leaders in the deaf community who will answer questions from students.

Two events were held in March 2003 to celebrate the 15th anniversary of DPN:

26 March 2003
A DPN Commemorative Social will be held at `Ole Jim’ from 7 to 10 p.m. People who were part of DPN will be present to celebrate the anniversary. There will be a program followed by a reception. Business attire is requested. The event is being arranged by the Gallaudet University Chapter of Collegiate National Association of the Deaf.

27 March 2003
Former student leaders will give a talk and be available for questions and answers, followed by a panel discussion, from 3 to 6 p.m. in the SAC Multipurpose Room. Among the panelists are Andrew Imparato, president and CEO of the American Association of People with Disabilities; Karen Peltz-Strauss, this year's Powrie V. Doctor Chair of Deaf Studies, who was closely involved in legislative issues relating to telecommunications shortly after DPN; and Kelby Brick, the NAD's associate executive director for law and advocacy. Dr. Benjamin Bahan, professor in the Department of ASL and Deaf Studies, will moderate the afternoon event. The panelists will discuss how DPN has affected them now and then, and their thoughts about the future. A reception will follow the panel.
