Back Issue: February 4, 2005 | Visiting researcher Audrei Gesser (second from left), a Ph.D. student in the Applied Linguistics Program at the State University of Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil, spoke on January 27 about the outcomes of her interactions at Gallaudet with deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing people. For the past six months, Gesser followed a typical student’s routine, living in Carlin Hall, attending classes, and having meals in the cafeteria. During this time she kept a daily journal, recording her and others’ impressions of life at the University: expressed attitudes and communication behaviors in relation to language, culture, and identity issues. Gesser’s research took place through the Office of International Programs and Services’ Center for Global Education and the Linguistics Department, with support from the Brazilian government. Pictured with Gesser are (from left): Global Education Program Specialist Lawrence Musa, President Jordan, Graduate Education and Extended Learning Associate Dean Robert Johnson, and Office of International Programs and Services Director ‘Bunmi Aina. |
