Back Issue: March 28, 2008 | Nippon Foundation Chair Yohei Sasakawa (first row, second from right), poses with students and (first row, from left) Special Assistant to the President for Board and External Relations Catherine Sweet-Windham, President Davila, and Office of Professional Studies and Outreach Dean Joseph Innes. Sasakawa came to Gallaudet on March 6 to meet with students who were awarded Nippon Foundation-sponsored scholarships—the Sasakawa International Scholarship, World Deaf Leaders (WDL) Scholarship, and Japanese ASL Signers Society (JASS) Scholarship. The Sasakawa International Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to deserving deaf international students, with preference given to students who are residents of developing countries. The goal of the WDL Scholarship, awarded to qualified Gallaudet students from developing nations, is to assist deaf leaders in the developing world by providing them with financial assistance to support their education. The program includes completing projects in scholars’ home countries to apply what they have learned at Gallaudet. JASS, a non-profit organization dedicated to introducing American Sign Language and deaf culture in Japan, administers a program that allows scholarship recipients to come to Gallaudet to learn ASL and participate in various internship experiences. |
