Back Issue: September 23, 2005 | Seven-year-old Reedy Hines (center), son of Biology Laboratory coordinator Danny Hines and Director of Admissions Charity Reedy Hines, gives student Christina Pullen a donation of $315 for books and supplies for her classes at Gallaudet, where she enrolled after evacuating New Orleans, La. Pullen was about to begin the semester at a culinary arts program in New Orleans when she was faced with the destruction of Hurricane Katrina and forced to leave. Previously accepted to Gallaudet in 2004, Pullen was allowed to enroll at the University for the fall semester. Reedy enlisted the help of his aunt and three cousins to raise funds for disaster relief. The weekend after the hurricane hit the Gulf Coast, he and his cousins stationed themselves outside the Galesville, Md., post office and sold tomatoes grown by his great-grandmother, raising a total of $865. The balance of the funds will go to the American Red Cross. Reedy is pictured above with his aunt, Carol Sue Sherbert. |
