Maribel Garate, an assistant professor in the Department of Education, leads a discussion at a May 21 training on bilingual teaching. Ten faculty members took part in the first two-week session of this ongoing training, beginning just after Commencement. The participants, who represent six departments in the College of Liberal Arts, Sciences, and Technologies, will work individually through the summer to develop bilingual teaching projects. They will reconvene in August to present their ideas, then implement their polished strategies in the fall. The training was organized by Dr. Dirksen Bauman, professor and coordinator of bilingual education in the ASL and Deaf Studies Program, and sponsored by the Office of Faculty Development, to address objective B.1 of the Gallaudet Strategic Plan, which emphasizes creating an environment and support systems that encourage degree completion.
